Are All Plumbers Messy?

Look, we understand the general perception of plumbers when it comes to cleanliness. Most of the time, when you ask someone to picture a plumber in their home, the image is the opposite of tidy, clean, and sanitary. I think it’s partially due to the nature of our work, but there’s also people’s own experiences with unfortunately messy plumbers that's at fault. There aren’t any regulations that require plumbers to clean up after themselves, so some bad apples take advantage of that and leave war zones behind.

As you know, plumbing can be a wet, muddy, and dusty endeavor. Depending on the project, we may have to cut into drywall, plastic or metal pipes, concrete, wood, and everything else in between. Outdoor work can require extensive digging and get crappy at times… literally. Even so, with all of the debris and dirt we have to deal with, our team at Rx-Plumbing firmly believes in clean, tidy work. We know that hiring a plumber is already a typically dreadful task because something is already amiss in your home and requires a professional fix. We don’t want you to also dread the aftermath of the fix because of a huge mess left behind by the experts you trusted with your time and money.

To illustrate our commitment to cleanliness, we want to share our process for a recent project of ours that required containment. Our client was dealing with one of the most stressful and disruptive plumbing issues around; a slab leak inside of their home. Slab leaks occur when the water pipes beneath a home’s concrete foundation begin to leak. They can cause significant water damage and even erode the foundation, so they’re not to be taken lightly. Unfortunately, the repair required breaking through their concrete slab, which requires extensive work and can create a devastating mess with concrete dust spreading everywhere. That’s where our commitment to zero dust comes in with our meticulous containment prep.

A recent project of ours involved a slab leak repair within the home, so thorough containment prep was done before breaking any concrete.

The Reality of a Slab Leak Repair

Slab foundations have been the most common home foundation for the past several decades and have only grown in popularity year over year. In fact, 72.4% of new homes in 2023 were built on slab foundations according to the National Association of Home Builders. This simply means that slab leaks aren’t a thing of the past, but an unfortunate plumbing problem that more and more homeowners are susceptible to. Before we talk about our containment process, we want to give you the signs to look for to ensure that you don’t fall victim to a persistent slab leak in your own home.

If you’ve noticed mysterious wet spots on your floors, unusually high water bills, or even the sound of running water when none is in use, you could be facing a slab leak. If left unchecked, they can weaken the foundation of your home and lead to structural issues that are both difficult and expensive to repair. Early detection is key to mitigating damage when it comes to slab leaks, so don’t ignore these signs! If you’re suspicious about a potential slab leak but still unsure, just give us a call for expert detection; we carry industry leading tools like moisture meters and infrared cameras that help us provide non-invasive leak detection services. When a slab leak occurs, there’s no other option but to fix it — but how that fix is carried out can make all the difference.

Experts in Minimizing Disruption

At RX-Plumbing, we understand that slab leak repairs are disruptive. Breaking through concrete in the middle of your living room or kitchen can feel invasive, but we take every step to minimize the impact on your daily life. Our team is committed to ensuring that the process is quick, clean, and efficient, and we have developed a reputation for our meticulous attention to detail.

As one of our clients, Justin, says, “They were quick and easy to work with! A very clean and efficient crew.

The Importance of Containment Prep Work

One of the key areas where Rx-Plumbing excels is in our containment prep work. We believe that no homeowner should have to deal with dust, debris, or residual mess after a repair. Before we even begin breaking through the concrete, our team takes time to carefully prepare the area, ensuring that dust and debris are fully contained.

Here’s how we do it:

1. Clearing the Work Area

All furniture, electronics, rugs, and personal items are moved out of the work area. If large items cannot be moved, we cover them with plastic sheeting to protect them from dust and debris.

2. Sealing Off Rooms and Areas

To prevent dust from spreading throughout the house, we use plastic sheeting to seal off the work area from floor to ceiling. This plastic is taped down to walls, floors, and ceilings to create a barrier that contains all dust and debris. We also cover the flooring with protective material, like drop cloths, cardboard, or other specialized material to ensure they aren’t damaged or dirtied throughout the process.

3. Protecting HVAC Systems

HVAC vents and ducts in the work area are sealed with plastic to prevent dust from being sucked into the home’s ventilation system and spreading throughout the house. In some cases, we even turn off the HVAC system while the work is being performed to avoid the circulation of dust.

4. Post-Work Cleanup

Once the concrete breaking is complete, our team thoroughly cleans the work area. This includes vacuuming all dust, carefully removing all of the plastic sheeting and floor protectants to avoid spreading dust, and wiping down surfaces. After cleanup, we make sure to inspect the work area for any damage or residual debris. Walls, floors, and other surroundings will be checked to ensure that everything is back in order.
