Georgians Can Get Paid to Upgrade Their Water Heaters (Up to $3,000)

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! To celebrate, we thought we’d share with you one of the world’s best kept secrets. No, we haven’t discovered what’s really at the end of a rainbow, but this is just as good as a pot of gold (almost).

Here it is: Many power companies will actually pay you to upgrade or convert your existing water heater, and the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 could save you even more with substantial tax credits. There are some eligibility requirements, but the bottom line is that you could be in line to receive up to $3,000 in total savings! Don’t worry if you just recently had a new water heater installed, because you could still be eligible to apply for the rebates!

These aren’t forever rebates, so there’s no telling when they’ll be removed or changed. We’ll go over the current offerings in the greater Atlanta region as of today, March 17th, 2025,  so you can see if any of them interest you. If you’re a resident of Sugar Hill, Cumming, Alpharetta, Roswell, or any other Atlanta suburb, now’s the perfect time for you to look into upgrading your water heater to save big!

Why Upgrade Your Water Heater?

There are some telltale signs of a failing water heater. Most water heaters have a recommended lifespan of 10 years, but this number can change drastically depending on your level of care and the type or model you own. As a water heater ages, its efficiency begins to drop and its durability begins to deteriorate. You can run the risk of your unit springing a leak and causing water damage to your home. If your water heater is on the newer side or still operating at a high level, you could still benefit from an upgrade. Newer models typically feature innovations that boost their efficiency and energy cost in comparison to older models, and different types of water heaters could be a better fit for your family. For instance, if you own a traditional tank unit, you could still make use of these rebates and tax credits to finally make the switch to a tankless water heater, a gas powered unit, or a heat pump water heater.

How Much Can You Save?

There are several factors that come into play to determine which rebates and tax credits you’re eligible for. It can get kind of confusing, so here’s a simple breakdown for homeowners within our service areas.

Rebates for Sugar Hill Residents – Get $500 Back

If you’re a customer of Natural Gas Connection in Sugar Hill, you’re eligible for a $500 rebate on the purchase and installation of a new energy-efficient water heater. This applies to both tank and tankless water heaters, so take advantage of these savings while you can!

If you meet these criteria but already installed a new unit, you could still be eligible to claim a rebate for it. You’ll have to submit your claim here within 90 days of purchasing the unit.

The tax credit applies to new, energy-efficient natural gas or heat pump water heaters with the following savings:

  • Tax credit of 30% of the cost of a natural gas water heater project, up to $600 in credit.

  • Tax credit of 30% of the cost of a heat pump water heater project, up to $2,000 in credit.
